International and Area Studies (IAS) at the University of California, Berkeley, is pioneering an innovative and integrated approach to global studies and leadership development.  Each summer, through UC Berkeley’s Summer Session, IAS will offer a 3-week institute, The Berkeley Institute for the Global Generation (IG2), which will train students in the fundamental concepts of globalization, global inequality, and global change.

Each year IG2 will tackle a different theme that amplifies key issues in global studies.  Such themes, ranging from “Human Rights & Human Security” to “Cities of the 21st Century” to “Environmental Justice & Sustainability”, will allow students to gain in-depth knowledge of an area of specialization in addition to the general education provided by the core module of the course.

Finally, IG2 will link theory and analysis to transformative forms of practice.  With the guidance and mentorship of faculty and graduate students, IG2 students will work in teams on a real-world project related to the institute theme, thus developing leadership skills.

IG2 welcomes UC Berkeley undergraduates, undergraduates from other campuses, and high school students who participate in UC Berkeley Summer Session through the pre-collegiate program.  A limited number of merit and need scholarships are available for pre-collegiate students.
