Information has not yet been updated for 2010

Pre-Commencement Reception
We hope that graduates and guests will join us for a pre-Commencement reception from 12 - 1PM in Moses Courtyard (between Stephens and Moses) for ***light*** refreshments.

There is no reception following the ceremony.

Lining Up

Graduates must arrive at Zellerbach Auditorium by 1:15pm.

Immediately upon arrival complete a name card at the information table.  Write down your name EXACTLY as you want it pronounced (e.g., phonetically).

Honors students and graduate students line up downstairs on the right with the faculty. Undergraduates should go upstairs and look for signs with your majors written on them.

You MUST line up with your fellow majors; otherwise, the Chair of your major will not be able to hand you a scroll. You do not have to line up in alphabetical order.

Guests
The doors will open at 1:10pm for guests requiring special accommodations (wheelchair users, walkers, etc.

Guests will need to provide their own wheelchairs, as Zellerbach does not have any that can be loaned.

The doors will open for general seating at 1:20pm. Every guest (except babes in arms) must have a ticket. Seating is non-reserved, so come early for best seating.

Guests are not permitted to bring tripods, food, drinks (except for water), balloons, confetti, or air horns into the auditorium, nor can they leave their seats during the ceremony.

Procession
Promptly at 2:00pm, "Pomp and Circumstance" will start up and you will begin your STATELY procession to your seat. The procession will proceed in the following order: Dean Roy, Commencement Speaker, Student Speaker, faculty, IAS Master's students, LAS master's students, Rotary Peace Fellows, honors students, DS undergrads, LAS undergrads, MES undergrads, PACS undergrads and PEIS undergrads. You will walk in on the right side of the middle section of the auditorium. Honors students will follow the faculty up on stage and sit behind them. All others will sit in the empty rows in front-center of the auditorium. If you are late and miss the procession you can either join the graduates in their seats or wait in the back until the presenting of the scrolls at the end of the ceremony.

The Ceremony
There will be a series of speeches and award announcements, and then the presenting of scrolls.  Scrolls will be presented in this order: IAS M.A.s, LAS M.A.s, Rotary World Peace Fellows, honors students, DS, LAS, MES, PACS and PEIS.

The walk from the stage to the seats and back involves two somewhat steep sets of stairs so you might want to wear sensible shoes and step carefully.

Grad students will go up the steps to the stage on the left, cross the stage and meet their faculty advisors. Turn to face the audience while your advisor places your hood over your head from behind. (To avoid hood strangulation, you may wish to wear a shirt with a button at the neck to attach the hood onto.) Then turn around to receive your ceremonial scroll -- your photo will be taken at this point - and return to your seat.

Honors Graduates will walk to the side of the stage with the podium and line up next to it.  Walk up to the podium, hand the name reader your index card, and then walk across the stage to the Chair of your department.   Shake hands, receive your scroll (smile for the camera!) and return to your seat.

Undergraduates should watch for the signal to rise and approach the stage. Someone will be there to tell you when to go up the steps to the stage.  When it is your turn, hand your index card to the name reader and then cross the stage to receive your scroll from the Chair of your major.  Pace yourselves and avoid bunching up, so the photographer has a clear shot of you as you shake hands and receive your scroll. Exit the stage from the stairs on the right, and return to your seats.

After everyone is seated, Dean Roy will invite the graduates to participate in the traditional "moving of the tassel" on their mortar boards from right to left.  Congratulations!

At the end of the ceremony, you will walk out of the auditorium in the same order in which you entered (i.e., faculty first).  You can meet your guests in the lobby, upstairs in the mezzanine, and outside Zellerbach on Lower Sproul Plaza.

Alcohol is strictly prohibited in the auditorium.  Anyone attempting to bring alcohol into the auditorium will be escorted out.  Balloons, air horns, confetti and food are also prohibited and will be confiscated.

The ceremony will last approximately 2-2.5 hours.

Restrooms
Restrooms are located on both sides of the main and mezzanine levels. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located on the main level.
