Perspectives on the Middle East
(2 Units)
Two hours of seminar per week. Pre-Requisites: None

A weekly seminar including guest speakers on (1) ethnic perspectives (Persians, Arabs, Turks, Israelis); (2) religious perspectives (Islam, Christianity, Judaism); and (3) disciplinary perspectives (anthropology, sociology, etc.). The seminar introduces students to the work of several major Berkeley Middle East scholars. Enrollment preference is given to lower division students and prospective Middle Eastern Studies majors.(Fall, Spring)

Sophmore Seminar
(1-2 Units)
See description. Pre-Requisites: Consent of instructor

One hour of seminar per week per unit for fifteen weeks. One and one half hours of seminar per week per unit for 10 weeks. Two hours of seminar per week per unit for eight weeks. Three hours of seminar per week per unit for five weeks. Sections 1-2 to be graded on a passed/not passed basis. Sections 3-4 to be graded on a letter-grade basis. Sophomore seminars are small interactive courses offered by faculty members in departments all across the campus. Sophomore seminars offer opportunity for close, regular intellectual contact between faculty members and students in the crucial second year. The topics vary from department to department and semester to semester. Enrollment limited to 15 sophomores. Course may be repeated for credit as topic varies.(Fall, Spring)

Directed Group Study
(1-4 Units)
Weekly group meetings. Pre-Requisites: Consent of instructor

Must be taken on a passed/not passed basis. Group discussion, research and reporting on selected topics under the supervision of a faculty member. Enrollment is restricted; see the Introduction to Courses and Curricula section of the General Catalog for more information. Subject matter changes from semester to semester. Course may be repeated for credit.(Fall, Spring)

MES 109
Model Arab League
(3 Units)
Two hours of lecture per week, plus participation in the Model Arab League simulation. Pre-Requisites: Consent of instructor

Must be taken on a passed/not passed basis. The Model Arab League is a simulation of the League of Arab States similar to the Model United Nations. Class meetings will be for familiarization of relevant political perspectives within the context of the Arab world. Students learn parliamentary procedure and to prepare resolutions. Each student is assigned to a committee and is responsible for participating in the development of the committee's resolution and its presentation at the Model Arab League.(Fall, Spring)

Cross Listed Topics

Variable. Pre-Requisites: Consent of instructor

This course is designed to accommodate cross listed courses offered through other departments, the content of which is applicable to Development Studies majors. Content and unit values vary from course to course. May be used to fulfill major requirements. Appropriate use may be checked in the Group Major Office. Special Topics
(2 Units)
Three hours of lecture per week for eight weeks. Pre-Requisites: Consent of instructor

A short course designed to provide a vehicle to take advantage of short term visitors coming to campus who have considerable expertise in areas of interest to Middle Eastern Studies. Topics will vary from semester to semester. Appropriate use may be checked in the Group Major Office. Course may be repeated for credit.(Fall, Spring)

MES 150
Advanced Studies in Middle Eastern Studies
(4 Units)
Three hours of lecture per week. Pre-Requisites: Consent of instructor

Advanced multidisciplinary research in current issues or regions of Middle Eastern Studies. The course will focus on specific areas or topics with appropriate comparative material included. A major research project is required as well as class presentations. Topics will vary from semester to semester. Course may be repeated for credit as topics change.(Fall, Spring)

MES 190
Senior Thesis
(1-4 Units)
Individual meetings. Pre-Requisites: Senior standing, one year of language in the major, at least fifteen upper division units in the major, Near Eastern Studies 10 or MES 10

With the guidance of a faculty member of the program, the preparation and presentation of a senior thesis pertaining to the student's individual area of concentration within the Middle Eastern Studies major. Final paper required. Units determined on consultation with instructor.(Fall, Spring)

MES H195A
Honors Course
(3 Units)
Individual meetings. Pre-Requisites: Senior standing with a grade point average of 3.6 in the major and 3.5 overall; consent of instructor.

The Honors Course is a two-semester sequence that culminates in an honors thesis. In H195A Research Methods in Middle Eastern Studies students determine a topic and prepare a detailed prospectus, including an annotated bibliography, review of relevant secondary literature, and identification of primary sources. In H195B the prospectus is developed into a thesis of approximately 75 pages under the direct supervision of a faculty member appropriate to the student's interest and chosen by the student in consultation with the coordinating faculty advisor. Students must register for both MES H195A and H195B for a letter grade.(Fall, Spring)

MES H195B
Honors Course
(3 Units)
Individual meetings. Pre-Requisites: Senior standing with a grade point average of 3.6 in the major and 3.5 overall; consent of instructor.

Must be taken on a pass/not passed basis. Supervised experience relevant to specific aspects of Middle Eastern Studies in off-campus organizations. Regular individual meetings with faculty sponsor and written reports required. Can be repeated for credit.(Fall, Spring)

Directed Group Study
(1-4 Units)
Weekly group meetings. Pre-Requisites: Consent of instructor

Must be taken on a passed/not passed basis. Seminar for the group study of selected Middle Eastern related topics not covered by regularly scheduled courses. A written proposal must be approved by a Middle Eastern Studies faculty advisor. Final paper required. Units determined on consultation with instructor.
